Pwani Oil Promotes Mental Health Awareness

Pwani Oil Champions Mental Wellness on World Mental Health Day

More than one billion people worldwide are living with mental health disorders, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The majority of these cases are found in low- and middle-income countries like Kenya, where mental health remains a growing public concern.

Conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders are now the second leading cause of long-term disability globally. In Kenya, data from the Ministry of Health lists depression, suicide, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and related psychoses as the most common mental health challenges. These findings underscore the need for continuous awareness, education, and compassion-driven community interventions.

Against this backdrop, Pwani Oil Limited, through its Detrex Antibacterial Soap brand, joined the global community in marking World Mental Health Day under the 2025 theme: “Increasing public awareness about the importance of mental health, mental health services, and mental health workers worldwide.”

As part of its People Pillar, which prioritizes community well-being, Pwani Oil partnered with the Kenya Professional Nurses Association (KPNA) and Chiromo Hospital Group for an awareness and wellness activation at Chiromo Hospital and its surrounding community.

The event drew hundreds of participants and featured a variety of activities promoting both physical and emotional health. Highlights included family aerobics, dance sessions, sports such as football, relays, tug-of-war, and a 5 km community walk. Participants also enjoyed creative activities like face painting, crafts, and board games, adding an inclusive and lighthearted touch to the day.

A key moment of the event was “Tufunguke Talk”, an open conversation on mental wellness that created a safe space for participants to discuss anxiety, resilience, and emotional health.

To celebrate and encourage ongoing wellness, 120 participants received Detrex Antibacterial Soap hampers as a token of appreciation.

“Through initiatives like this, we aim to not only support our communities but also inspire open conversations that end stigma and promote compassion,” said Rajul Malde, Commercial Director, Pwani Oil Limited.

As WHO continues to advocate for greater global investment in mental health, Pwani Oil’s participation reinforces its ongoing commitment to empowering communities to live healthier, more resilient lives — both in body and mind.
