DJ Abby: The Rising Star Redefining Nairobi’s Music Scene
The sun was setting over Nanyuki as the Tusker #Oktobafest2025 crowd came alive. On stage, a young woman with effortless confidence and rhythm had everyone on their feet. She wasn’t just playing music; she was commanding energy. When she finally stepped off stage, still glowing from the rush, we caught up with her for a quick chat.
Abigael Muthoka, better known as DJ Abby, is a Nairobi-based producer and DJ who’s shaking up the scene with her bold energy and sound. On this day, she shared the stage with the iconic DJ Grauchi, but it was clear that Abby was carving her own lane.
Q: Who is DJ Abby?
A: I’m a DJ and producer based in Nairobi. I’m hungry to do things differently, to stand out and to inspire anyone who’s passionate about music to keep going.
Q: How old are you?
A: (Laughs) The question is young. Let’s say I’m young both in age and spirit.
Q: Why did you decide to become a DJ?
A: Honestly, I found myself here. Someone saw one of my videos on social media and happened to own a club. He invited me to play even though I didn’t know how to. He had the equipment, so I practiced until I got better. Each time I played, I grew more confident.
Q: Do you focus on a specific genre?
A: Not really. I do everything and anything under the sun. Coming from a music production background, I believe in diversity. The more you experiment with sound, the more you understand music and that makes you a better DJ. You can’t throw me on the spot and expect me to choke.
Q: Are you self-taught or trained?
A: I’m self-taught, but I had the tools and resources I needed to learn.
Q: What challenges have you faced so far?
A: Being underestimated. People look at me, young, petite and a woman and assume I don’t know what I’m doing. Then I step on stage and everything changes.
Q: What’s something most people don’t know about you?
A: I’m actually very shy and nervous. And I’m a lover girl too.
Q: Do you still DJ in clubs?
A: Not anymore. I only did that when I was starting. These days, I focus on events.
Q: What advice would you give to someone chasing a similar dream?
A: Jitume. Your network is your net worth. Use what you have, friends, family, and whatever’s within reach to create opportunities.
Q: What do you do when you’re not playing music?
A: I practice psychology, which I studied and I produce music.
