Safaricom Shangwe @25 Creates Five New Millionaires

Safaricom Shangwe @25 Enters Fifth Week, Creating Five New Millionaires

Campaign now boasts 15 millionaires, each receiving an additional KES 250,000 for community projects

Safaricom’s nationwide Shangwe @25 consumer promotion has entered its fifth week, creating five new millionaires and bringing the total number of KES 1 million winners to 15 since the campaign launched in November 2025.

The latest winners are Faith Muchira from Embu, Charlotte Wachera from Naivasha, Susy Namalwa from Malava in Kakamega County, Joseph Ndung’u from Mombasa, and Geoffrey Kipkoech Rop from Nairobi.

In addition to the cash prize, each winner received an extra KES 250,000 to support a community project of their choice, extending the impact of the Shangwe @25 celebration beyond individual households to communities across the country.

Speaking during the award ceremony in Embu, where Safaricom also celebrated customers through the Green Box mechanic, Faith Muchira, a 30-year-old mother of two, described her win as life-changing.

“Even now, I am still in disbelief that I am a new millionaire. I regularly buy data bundles using M-PESA so my child can watch cartoons. This is truly a miracle from God, and I thank Safaricom for this gift,” she said.

Muchira plans to expand her nail parlour, rice shop, and rabbit farming business. For her community project, she will support the Kathigiri New Arimi Self-Help Group by providing chairs and tents to assist with local ceremonies and funerals.

For Charlotte Wachera, a 27-year-old health worker at Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Naivasha, the call initially seemed too good to be true.

“I thought it was a scam until I received the confirmation message. I plan to open a clinic in my hometown to improve access to healthcare,” she said. Her community project will support Baharini ECD in Kihoto, including school uniforms, classroom renovations, and a vegetable garden to provide sustainable nutrition for learners.

In Mombasa, Joseph Ndung’u, a 27-year-old Tuk-Tuk driver, said the news came shortly after completing a customer trip.

“I did not believe it at first and even borrowed a friend’s phone to confirm it was Safaricom,” he said. Ndung’u plans to purchase another Tuk-Tuk, open a spare parts shop, and support his younger brother’s education. His community contribution will benefit Njambere Primary School through desks, lockers, and shelves.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Kipkoech Rop, a 49-year-old security guard from Ruaka, Nairobi, received the news during a training session.

“I lack words. I will build rental houses in Nandi for stable income and expand my dairy farm,” he said. His community project will support his local church with chairs.

In Kakamega County, Susy Namalwa, a 65-year-old widow and mother of four, said the win marked a turning point after decades of struggle.

“I have raised my children alone for 30 years. I will expand my catering business by purchasing tents and cooking equipment,” she said. Namalwa plans to support her church in Kiandike by contributing toward the completion of its construction.

Beyond individual winners, the Shangwe @25 campaign also rewarded 12 micro and small businesses. Five received Tuk-Tuk pickups to support logistics and deliveries, including Samuel Kimando, Alex Wasike, Manjok Ltd, Douglas Onserio, and Muriiri Girls Secondary School.

Four businesses — Robstar Premium Fit Ltd, Sawe Cheruiyot Mais, Ronak Distributors, and Golden Green Properties Ltd — received stock worth KES 250,000 each to accelerate growth.

In the large and medium enterprise category, Vivo Activewear Ltd, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and GlovoApp Ltd each received KES 500,000 to support corporate social responsibility projects during the festive season.

Since its launch, Shangwe @25 has rewarded thousands of customers daily and weekly with cash prizes, data bundles, devices, and business support tools. Each week, more than 50,000 winners receive prizes of KES 10,000, KES 50,000, or KES 100,000. Over the promotion period, more than five million customers are expected to win prizes worth KES 250 million.

Customers can participate by transacting on M-PESA, including sending money, paying with M-PESA, redeeming Bonga Points, or purchasing Safaricom products such as data bundles, voice bundles, digital services, or Home Fibre. Merchants and M-PESA agents also qualify through Buy Goods, Pochi la Biashara, and transactions of KES 1,000 and above.
