“We Are All Kikuyus”: Kenyans Unite After Saba Saba Protests

In a strong display of unity, Kenyans on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter) have rallied behind the trending hashtag #WeAreAllKikuyus, rejecting tribal narratives that surfaced after the July 7 Saba Saba protests. The, We are all kikuyus online movement was sparked by claims that members of the Kikuyu community were behind the looting and unrest seen during the protests, prompting thousands to respond with solidarity.

The hashtag started trending on Monday evening and gained momentum through Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, it had become the most popular topic on X in Kenya. Users began posting their full names, photos, and counties of origin, all followed by the phrase “WeAreAllKikuyus” a symbolic act to reject ethnic divisions and promote national unity.

Several high-profile individuals joined the trend. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua posted, “I am Rigathi Gachagua Reraini. I am from Nyeri. #WeAreAllKikuyus.” Political leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa also echoed the message. Celebrities, content creators, and media personalities used their platforms to amplify the call for unity.

Not everyone supported the movement. Dennis Itumbi, Head of Creative Economy in the Office of the President, dismissed the trend as politically motivated. He claimed it was orchestrated by allies of Rigathi Gachagua and warned against what he described as “digital terror.” “We are all Kenyans and no part of Kenya should be hijacked,” he posted.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Saba Saba protests left 31 dead, 107 injured, 2 abducted, and over 500 arrested as of Tuesday evening. These tragic numbers have added urgency to the calls for peace and unity.

As tribal tensions threaten to resurface, many Kenyans continue to use #WeAreAllKikuyus as a powerful statement: that the country belongs to all, and unity is the only way forward
